Virgil Edward "Ed" Sellers, 82, Belton, Missouri, formerly of Plattsburg, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2021.
He was born October 31, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri to Luther and U'Lee (Brooks) Sellers.
Ed married Georgie Ann Whitsell on June 3, 1962. She survives of the home.
Ed was a U.S. Army veteran assigned to the 45th radar detachment in Arlington Heights, Illinois; he attained the rank of Sergeant (SP5).
He was a retired school counselor, teacher, and assistant coach, and was certified as a professional counselor, psychological examiner and teacher. He began his education career teaching history and English at Blue Springs Junior High School, and he spent 32 years as a counselor at Raytown South Junior High School/Raytown South Middle School, was Counseling Department chair, and was a past president of the Professional Counselors Association.
Virgil earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Central Missouri and his education specialist degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was a lifetime member of Sigma Tau Gamma.
He competed in football, basketball and track at Plattsburg High School and in track at UCM. He was a lifeguard and swimming/diving instructor as well as a slalom water skier. He also was an inactive licensed private pilot in various aircraft, and he maintained a lifetime passion for flying.
Ed played fiddle with the Bluegrass Missourians on 16 albums over 44 years, and he was the band's website manager. He was a four-time Kansas State Fiddle Champion and was voted second twice. He also was a seven-time SPBGMA Midwest Nominee for Fiddler of the Year. As family and friends can attest, Ed never missed an opportunity to play or enjoy bluegrass music.
Ed loved to travel, having visited all 50 states, 37 countries, five continents and a Greenland flyover. He also had owned an American Saddlebred horse, shown by his wife, and he served as vice president, board member and website manager of the Mid-America Saddlebred Horse Club.
Ed also was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Georgie; son, Mark Sellers (Treta) of McKinney, Texas; and grandchildren, Rachel and Kian.
Farewell Services 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, Bailey and Cox Family Funeral Service Plattsburg Missouri. Interment Greenlawn Cemetery Plattsburg. The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 P.M.
