Obituary

Carolyn Kincaid Sullivan died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at her home in Plattsburg, MO.

She was born Jan. 11, 1936 (though there is some confusion about this as her birth certificate says Jan. 12) to Alvis and Carrie Kincaid. They named her Harriet Carolyn but she wasn't a fan of that first name and always went by Carolyn.

She attended Maryville College and then the University of Missouri, where she met her future husband, Richard "Dick" Sullivan. He spied her one day in the cafeteria line and instantly thought, "I'm going to marry that girl." You can't blame him. She had great legs.

They were married on Dec. 26, 1959, and soon moved to Mason City, IA, where Dick got a job as a newspaper reporter. She taught in the Mason City school system briefly before becoming a stay-at-home mom.

She and Dick moved to Plattsburg when he retired, in part, so they could help Alvis and Carrie in their later years.

Carolyn loved reading, everything from classics to crime. She also loved movies, musicals and music. Glen Campbell held a special place in her heart and one day she cranked "Rhinestone Cowboy" so loud that a wine glass shattered.

She loved good food and good drink, especially beer if it was Smithwicks, wine if it was red, and whiskey if it was Jack Daniels. She was also a great cook, and kept all sizes of plastic containers on hand so she could share her excellent bean soup with its many fans.

She loved traveling, and visited various destinations in the United States, Europe and South America. She was especially fond of England, Ireland and Scotland, all places she visited frequently with her favorite travel agent and beloved cousin, Rosemary Stipe.

She loved, loved, loved dachshunds, and had a series of them during her lifetime. Her home was filled with weiner dog memorabilia. From pillows to plates, t-shirts to tea towels, if there was a dachshund on it, she had it.

She was also a legendary shopper, and did more than her part to support the retail economy of the greater Kansas City area and beyond. Particularly shoe stores. (We better get a sympathy card from Cole Haan.)

Carolyn faced challenges in her life, including going through successful treatment for breast cancer in the early 1970s, a time when you rarely heard the words "breast" or "cancer" said out loud, let alone in the same sentence. Through everything, she lived her life with humor, dignity and an inspiring generosity of spirit.

She served on the boards of the First Christian Church and Oakridge care center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son-in-law, Mark Gard.

She is survived and forever dearly loved by her four children, Steve, Sally Gard, Rick (Marni) and Michael; four grandchildren, Jordon, Brittany, Harry and Madeline; and four great-grandchildren, Landon, Brendon, Lux and Milo. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Her family wants to thank Linda Sales, Laura McBee and Kay Stark for providing Carolyn excellent care and companionship during the last years of her life.

Memorials and flowers can be made to the First Christian Church of Plattsburg, 501 W. Clay, Plattsburg, MO, 64477.
